Suspensions & Solutions (2018)
Developed in close collaboration with Liam Byrne, Suspensions & Solutions centres on an expanded sonic palette for viola da gamba (a fretted string instrument from the Renaissance era) shaped through a range of electronic treatments. These processes extend and refract the instrument’s sound, creating textures that move between clarity and diffusion, presence and dissolution. The piece takes its name from the different states in which particles exist within liquid — suspended, like sand in seawater, or dissolved, like dye dispersing through fabric.
