Cave Meditation
Cave Meditation is a site-specific ‘ritual journey of becoming’ where the cave itself — and its unique acoustics — becomes an active collaborator. Created with contralto Jess Dandy and filmmaker Bobby Williams, the piece emerges directly from the space, shaped by its resonance, geology, history and lingering emotional residue of its former life as a slate quarry.
The music is shaped directly by the cave’s resonant properties.
Through extensive on-site experimentation, specific pitches, timbres, and vocal techniques were discovered that allowed the space to “speak.”
The resulting score functions as a flexible framework rather than a fixed composition, guiding the performer through a sonic journey that mirrors the cave’s internal geography. Vocal sounds, silences, and resonances interact with the natural acoustics, while the use of stones and ritual percussion connects the sound world to the cave’s material history as a slate quarry. The piece unfolds as a meditation on listening — to space, to resonance, and to the self.
The performance itself is conceived as a ritual journey through the cave. Movement through the space is integral, with the performer navigating its tunnels, chambers, and vantage points as part of a process of exploration and self-discovery. Bobby Williams’ film is not simply documentation but an essential component of the work: a slow, immersive portrait that captures the interplay between body, sound, and environment. Using a fixed visual perspective, the film invites the viewer into a contemplative experience, where the boundaries between performance, landscape, and observation dissolve.
